Audits and Pre-Inspections
Once your equipment has been agreed upon, our Operations team will schedule in your Pre-Inspection and Audit appointments!
Preliminary EnerGuide Evaluation
This initial assessment will provide an EnerGuide rating and suggest personalized energy improvements for your home.
Application Form Submission
Complete and submit the BetterHomes Ottawa Loan Program Application Form.
Approval Notice
Upon meeting all program criteria, you will receive an Approval Notice detailing the maximum loan value and other program terms.
Cost Estimates Collection
Gather and prepare your cost estimates for the proposed retrofit. Our in-house Experts can help you with this step.
Loan Request Form Submission
At this stage, you can opt to request 50% of the funds upfront and sign the Property Owner Agreement.
Home Retrofit
Start the retrofit process in your home based on the approved measures.

Post-retrofit EnerGuide Evaluation
After the retrofit projects are completed, conduct a post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation to get an updated rating. Our Experts can help you coordinate this step.
Project Completion Report Submission
Submit your Project Completion Report detailing the completed retrofit work.
Final Loan Disbursement
The City of Ottawa will provide the remaining loan balance.

FAQs Regarding The BetterHomes Program
Eligibility for the BetterHomes Ottawa program depends on several factors including the type of home, its current energy efficiency, and the proposed improvements.
The program covers a range of energy-efficient improvements, including heat pumps and electrical upgrades that 1Click2Switch can help you with!
The minimum loan amount that will be issued to an applicant is $10,000.
The program’s terms and conditions specify that funding is for approved improvements made after the loan is granted.
You are eligible for a second loan application as long as the requested amount remains below the lower limit of either 10% of the property value or $125,000. The minimum loan amount for your second application is set at $5,000.
The BetterHomes Ottawa Loan Program initially offered limited zero-interest loans, but the funding has been fully allocated. Now, applicants can access 20-year loans at a fixed interest rate of 4.33%, still providing the opportunity to improve property comfort and save money through energy efficiency.
It will take approximately two weeks. Once you submit your application form, the City of Ottawa will review your property tax and utility accounts to ensure you are in good standing. If you are a new homeowner with less than 5 years of payment history, we will request a Credit Score. A minimum Credit Score of 600 will be required to receive program approval.
Upon submitting your Funding Request Form documentation, you can expect to receive your Property Owner Agreement within 1-2 weeks. Please note that if any documents are missing from your submission, it may extend the processing time.
There is a 4-week processing period before the City of Ottawa sends out your final disbursement by mail.
Applicants will receive the loan capital after they have submitted their final project documentation. When submitting your Funding Request Form You are able to request 50% of your estimated project cost in advance to help with deposits and other up-front costs.
This means that the loan is linked to your property rather than you personally. If the property is sold, the loan remains with the property.
The valuation of your home is derived from your MPAC assessment, in the same way as your property tax calculation.
